Natura 2000 is an European ecological network of areas designed for biodiversity conservation. There are Special Areas of Conservation designated under the Habitats Directive, and Special Zones for Birds protection established under the Birds Directive.
The purpose of this network is to ensure the long-term survival of species and habitats threatened in Europe, helping to halt biodiversity loss caused by the impact of human activities. This is one of the most important instruments for the conservation of nature in the European Union.
Some ecosystems studied by LIFE CUBOMED project are framed within NATURA 2000 areas, mainly Posidonia oceanica (priority habitat) and Cymodocea spp. meadows.
